Notes for next week’s rehearsal: May 13th

Although there were more folk away than I would have liked I thought we had a very productive and also fun rehearsal last night. We have now completed the note-bashing of the Bach Magnificat and have been through the Handel Dixit Dominus completely. The Bach now needs to be secured so that we can give a confident performance with heads out of the copies as much as possible. The Handel still needs a lot of work to make secure but both are in a good place. Thank you for you hard work.

Next week we will start with Dixit Dominus, probably in this order:

No.4 pg 30 (old edition) Juravit Dominus – also no.4 pg 30 in the new edition – a thorough workout.
No.5 pg 37 (old edition) pg 36 (new edition) – Secundum ordinem Melchisedech – a thorough workout.
No.6 pg 53 (old edition) pg 47 (new edition) – Dominus a dextris Meis – – a run through
No.6 pg 59 (old edition) No.7 pg 53 (new edition – Judicabit – a thorough workout.
Final movement – pg 86 (old edition) pg 77 (new edition) – Et in saecula seculorum amen – a through workout

And if we have time …

Bach Magnificat (woof-woof)
1st movement – Magnificat. (Pg 2 Novello) (pg 7 Barenreiter)
12th movement – Gloria – including Sicut erat in principio (pg 52 Novello) (pg 61 Barenreiter)

Next Wednesday’s rehearsal – May 6th

Once again I have left the rehearsal and been delighted with your vocal stamina and the energy of your singing. Keep up the great work. I love it all!

We have now been through all of the Bach Magnificat.

No.7 – fecit potentiam – will be one that we will rehearse and aim to speed up.
No.4 – Omnes – should run through fairly well now.
No.12 – Gloria – I will spend some time on the 1st section but also run the ’sick erat in principio’ section too.

Dixit Dominus.

No.4 – Juravit Dominus – we have not sung yet, so I will take you through the movement.

All the other movements need to be recapped and gradually speeded up.

Perhaps next week will include these two, that we have worked at on just one occasion.
No.5 – secundum ordinem Melchisedech
No.6 – bar 149 or No.7 bar 1 – pages 59 or 53 – Judicabit.

That, I am sure will be plenty!

John says:

What a wonderful choir you are – putting up with my piano playing last week!   But many thanks to those who said how much they appreciated the steady and detailed learning of notes and picking out of particularly difficult moments.
